Thankful For TLC Rescue
This Thanksgiving mom said it’s time to give special thanks to The Lucky Cat (TLC) Rescue, our local cat rescue group here in Weehawken, New Jersey.
What Does TLC Rescue Do?
Headed up by Mercy Garcia, her husband Miguel Fernandez, Joan Doljan, Phillip Lewis and Courtney Bearns, TLC rescue has been dedicated to improving the lives of our community’s most vulnerable – the stray cats, the feral cats, the abandoned house cats and the endless litters of kittens due to many careless pet owners who never spayed or neutered their cats and then tossed them out on the street.
For years they have trapped, neutered, vaccinated and returned feral and unsocial community cats to the managed colonies and areas where they were trapped. Each of those cats has had their left ear tipped straight across at the top – the international sign that the cat has been neutered.
Mixed in with the unfriendly cats are many friendly cats that are adoptable and deserving of a forever home with a loving human parent! TLC is very focused on these cats and after they have been fully vetted, they are then ready to be adopted. To help their cause, they have a relationship with Pet Smart Charities – and every Saturday, they are at our local Secaucus Pet Smart with adorable cats and kittens who are looking for their furr-ever homes!
That’s where mom saw me almost 4 years ago! And 2 years later, Mercy found Beau for us at the West New York shelter. Mom says she is eternally thankful that she went to Pet Smart one Saturday and met Mercy, because it changed all of our lives!
TLC Rescue’s Mission
TLC Rescue is a non-profit 501/c3 organization and depends on donations and some grants – as well as their own fundraising events. They are supported by a dedicated group of fosters and volunteers who share the same passion to help our community cats.
Their whole mission is to trap the cats and have them neutered and vetted to end the cycle of reproduction. It has been proven that a steady TNR/TNA program can bring the local community cat population to zero growth over time.
They also educate their adoptive parents on best cat practices. They often offer open seminars in the community to teach about TNR/TNA initiatives and how everyone can get involved to help end the cycle of reproduction.
In addition, Mercy volunteers for the UCAT community cat spay/neuter program in Union City and is the lead trapper in that initiative. We are always in awe of her and her dedication to the cats! It is a 7-day a week job, in all types of weather and at all times of day and night. We cannot thank her enough for what she does for the kitties.
How You Can Help TLC Rescue
Mom says Mercy and the team inspired her to help TLC Rescue with their fundraisers and related initiatives. Mom says since she doesn’t personally trap or feed, the best help she can give them is to find ways to bring in more donations to take care of more cats each year.
